Dear neighbors,
I’m writing to share the incredibly sad news that our beloved friend, neighbor, and Public Works Superintendent, Chris Klar, passed away suddenly this morning. Chris was a close personal friend, and I am filled with deep sadness as I reflect on the many years of knowing him—his heartfelt passion for our city, his generous and selfless contributions to so many, and the foundation of service and integrity that defined everything he did.
I had the opportunity to speak with his partner, Jodie, and his sister, Kathy, and to see Chris shortly after he passed. It was a bittersweet moment—a profound sadness for a life taken too soon, yet also a beautiful time of remembrance as we reflected on the wonderful person we all loved so much. I also want to express my gratitude to the members of our fire department and Hennepin Emergency Medical Services, who did everything they could to help Chris during his final moments.
There are many details still to be worked out as the family plans his memorial, and the city determines how to manage the many responsibilities Chris so passionately handled for us all. Chris also provided personalized services to many households. I will share additional information as it becomes available. For now, we will focus on celebrating the life of our dear friend.
I feel truly honored to have known Chris, and I am deeply grateful for all he did for our city. As I reflect on everything Chris stood for—as both a person and a professional—I’m reminded of the same quote from Abraham Lincoln that I shared when honoring his father, Alan Klar. I’d like to share it again now, in honor of Chris Klar:
“I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.” – Abraham Lincoln.
I imagine Lincoln wrote this with people like Alan and Chris Klar, in mind.
Chris, you will be missed, but never forgotten.
Blessings to the Klar family.
